After listening to copious amounts of Slayer, Motorhead, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath sometimes you just need to smooth things out a bit with some Hall and Oates, which inspired the naming of this ale. Small 'n Oats is created with the second runnings of wort from an Alderaan Imperial Oat Stout brew, which is in fact Deth's Tar before the barrel-aging. This is a classic English brewing method for creating a second beer from the same mash after the initial high gravity wort was collected for the first brew. However, the second beer is sometimes referred to as a “small beer” clocking in at about 3% ABV, which is not the case here by any means! The wonderful English specialty malts such as Roasted Barley, Black Malt, Dark Crystal, Oat Malt and flaked oats provide this beer with layers of complex aromas and flavors such as coffee and dark chocolate and a smooth silky mouthfeel without being sweet. We were very gentle with the hop usage of this beer bittering with a sprinkle of German Magnum and Slovenian Styrian Goldings in the whirlpool. We love making second runnings beers here at Revolution. This process allows us to be more efficient with our raw materials and gives us as brewers some room to play around and experiment with wort that would have otherwise not been saved.
