This Brown Ale was brewed to incorporate the unique ‘woody’ flavors of the HBC* Experimental Hop 472 with the nutty, lightly roasted, caramel flavors of the base beer. Pale and Ashburne Mild provide a solid malt base, while the Victory malt adds biscuity notes, and the Dark Chocolate malt imparts the majority of the color, and the roastiness. The 472 hops impart hints of spice, wood, and earthy notes. This beer used the 472 in the kettle, and for dry-hop; and though there are more finishing hops in this brown than the Working Woman, they come through a bit less aggressively in the brew.
This beer was named after John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, an effort by white abolitionist John Brown to initiate an armed slave revolt in 1859 by taking over a United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. John Brown was an American abolitionist who believed armed insurrection was the only way to overthrow the institution of slavery in the United States.
