V.S.O.J. and Code Switch Release

Date – October 19 Location — Taproom  /  Chicago, IL
Time – 4-11 p.m.

This October, we’ll be kicking off our 2018 – 2019 Deep Wood Series. This first release includes V.S.O.J., a two-year-aged version of our award-winning barrel-aged barleywine, out for the first time ever in cans. We’ll also be releasing Code Switch, our collaboration with Sun King Brewery in Indianapolis.

A celebration of malt, oak, and patience, Very Special Old [Straight] Jacket is a cuvée of English Barleywines each aged between two and three years in our favorite bourbon barrels. Lusciously sweet and colossally complex, V.S.O.J. is equal parts refinement and excess. The barrel-aged Barleywine clocks in at 13.8% ABV.

Built on a dual algorithm written alongside our friends from Sun King Brewery, this new, complex Imperial Ale was brewed with maple sugar, dark candi syrup, and a blend of Belgian yeast cultures. An early switch from Tennessee whiskey to Kentucky bourbon barrels ensured the integrity of the code – with the addition of unfermented blackberries for balancing sweetness and subtle tartness. Code Switch rings in at 14.5% ABV.

The first pours of V.S.O.J. and Code Switch will take place across draft-only preview parties held at bars and retailers on Thursday, October 18, the night prior to the release event at the Revolution Taproom. Join us at a preview party at a location listed below:

  • Gaslight - Atlantic Highlands (6−8 p.m.)

  • Canal Bar — Brooklyn (6−8 p.m.)
  • Top Hops on Orchard St. — Manhattan (6−8 p.m.)

Following the preview parties, we will be hosting a V.S.O.J. and Code Switch release at the Revolution Taproom on Kedzie on Friday, October 19 from 4 – 11 p.m.

Deep Wood Series can sales will take place separate from the taproom, next door in our shipping and receiving department (3350 N. Kedzie Ave).

  • Code Switch — 4‑pack — $30 + tax (Limit: TBA)
  • V.S.O.J. - 4‑pack — $35 + tax (Limit: TBA)

All credit card terminals will be used for to-go sales, to speed along the lines. Both cash and credit cards will be accepted when purchasing Code Switch and V.S.O.J. 4‑packs.

Draft pours in the Taproom will be CASH ONLY (ATMs will be on-site) to ensure the fastest possible service. Draft pricing will be as follows:

  • 5 oz. barrel-aged beers, including variants: $6.00
  • 16 oz. Pints of non-barrel-aged beers: $6.00

V.S.O.J. and Code Switch FAQ:

1 ) Will 4‑packs make it until the next day?
We won’t know that until we see the turnout at the release events, so we’re not able to predict how long each beer will be available. We will announce at the end of the release event if any 4‑packs remain.

2 ) Will any of the variants be on tap the following day?
There’s a chance we will have draft-only variants on tap the following day. Please check our website or our Untappd page, which we update in real-time, to see what is on draft.

3 ) What are the limits?
Limits will be updated once the beers are packaged and we perform final counts. RSVP to our Facebook Event to receive an alert when we make that announcement.

4 ) Will the lines be under cover again?
Yes! The line to buy Deep Wood Series cans will once again be underneath our driveway, located at the North end of the building, keeping you out of the elements and a little warmer.

5 ) Where will Code Switch and V.S.O.J. cans be available?
During the release, Code Switch and V.S.O.J. cans will be sold out of our Shipping & Receiving area, next door to the Taproom at 3350 N. Kedzie Ave. Code Switch 4‑packs will see limited distribution outside of the Revolution Taproom. Please use our Beer Finder to locate Code Switch at a location near you, beginning in late October.

6 ) Will there be food available at the release events?
The Revolution Taproom doesn’t serve food, but we encourage customers to bring their own food, and we’ll have food trucks scheduled to come and serve Rev fans.

7 ) Why doesn’t the release begin until 4:00pm?
It takes an army to set up and execute our barrel-aged releases, ensuring that service and lines move quickly. The 4:00pm start time is out of necessity to ensure we have a large enough staff to make your experience enjoyable. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

8 ) Is the beer ready to drink right away?
All of our Deep Wood Series beers are already aged between 6 – 36 months (depending on the beer) before we package them. They’re absolutely ready to drink right away, and we don’t recommend piling them on a lonely shelf for years at a time. Seriously — we made these beers for you to enjoy. Bottoms up!

9 ) How do they age over time in a can?
We flash pasteurize our Deep Wood Series beers. We’ve also tasted many of our beers aged over a year in cans and haven’t picked up any big changes in flavor apart from the effects of normal aging. And again, we really think they’re great now and hope you will too.
